The newspaper articles seen in ASiB established John’s canon age as 37.
Martin is 40.
There’s really no reason to make him a different age than the actor who plays him. Unless…
That’s a difference of three years.
Which would enable them to give Sherlock a three-year absence,…
REICHENBACH IS GOING TO FUCKING KILL ME.
Different, less angsty theory: Canon!Watson is two years older than Holmes. Cumberbatch is 35. If they’re using his age as Sherlock’s, but want to stay true to canon, then that would explain the choice of 37 - two year age gap.
Honestly, I expected them to make both characters younger, since in the canon they met in their late 20s/early 30s.
That is a good alternative. I’m seriously not sure if I want mine to be right or yours.
*insert ‘not sure if want’ gif here*
I must confess to preferring the Reichenbach theory. If only partly because it means we won’t actually have to wait.
But then that would mean that Sherlock would be older than Cumberbatch by Empty House time. Hmm.
We shall see what, if anything, they do with this.
